Gustav Friedrich Hetsch (nach): Empire Tafelaufsatz, ca. 1825 – Bronze, fire-gilt, Paris, c. 1820–1830; an identical counterpart is in the Oval Office, Washington Important fire-gilt centrepiece or “Centre de Surtout de Table” after a design by Gustav Friedrich Hetsch. Empire / Restoration period, c. 1820–1830. Height: 56.4 cm. Diameter: 23.5 cm. Weight: 10 kg. Unmarked. Made in Paris in one of the famous workshops of Thomire et Cie, Feuchère or Denière et Matelin after a design of 1815 by the German-Danish architect G. F. von Hetsch (1788–1864). From 1809 Hetsch studied under Charles Percier in Paris and later worked at the Danish royal court in Copenhagen under King Frederick VI of Denmark. In 1818 Hetsch sold numerous of his design sketches to the Danish court. In 1829 King Frederick VI ordered an identical showpiece in Paris, based on one of these sketches, as a wedding gift for his daughter Caroline. This masterpiece in gilt bronze can still be seen today in the Bronze Room of Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. This important showpiece is a piece of world history, as its counterpart now adorns the Oval Office in Washington. Donald Trump’s Oval Office houses a whole series of historic showpieces and gilded decorations that represent a true “piece of history”. Like every President of the United States, President Trump has the right to furnish the Oval Office according to his own taste. His fondness for gold is clearly expressed here. He has also tripled the number of paintings on the walls of his office. In total, almost 20 paintings now hang in the Oval Office, all of statesmen he admires. Among them are Ronald Reagan, George Washington and Andrew Jackson.
